Skirt FACTsination – The Pencil Skirt (Part 1)

WWI had an effect on fashion because of the fabric shortage.  A shorter calf length skirt replaced the hobble skirt.

In 1940, Christian Dior designed the first pencil skirt, which is like a knee length hobble skirt. The women welcomed this after the shapeless flapper skirt, because it showed their curves. Corsets became stylish again because they enhanced the pencil skirts shape. Tunics were also fashionable to wear with pencil skirts. Pencil skirts were also very fashionable with celebrities, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly are a few of the many who loved them. In fact pencil skirts were so fashionable that they are still worn today.
