There’s something inspirational going on this year.  Celina of Petit a Petit and Family created Project Sew It.  You can read all about it here, but the basic premise is to sew one thing every month.  I’m putting my own twist on it by sewing one thing for each of my nieces and nephews for their birthdays this year.  It won’t end up being once per month, and sometimes it’ll be more than once per month, but it’s my goal!  I sew so much for my kids, that I want to share the sewing love.

I know it’s July, but I have some of June’s Project Sew It up for you today.  My version of Project Sew It is that I”m sewing something for each of my nieces and nephews this year.  Today I have a Carousel Dress for a special niece.

Earlier in the year, I purchased some french terry fabric from Mabel Madison during a super good sale.  I knew it was just the sort of thing one of my nieces would love.  Then the object was to find the perfect pattern to go with the large scale print.

After looking through my patterns, I had an aha moment when I came across the Playhouse Dress by Fishsticks Designs.  You might remember the fox dress I made for Annie a few years ago using this pattern.

I think this fabric was made for this pattern!  It stands out a little better than the lightweight fox fabric.  Plus French Terry is a nice breathable fabric for summer.  I paired this with grey sweatshirt fleece leftover from making Thomas’s knight hoodie, I think.

I just had enough of the large scale print for the front of the dress, and the smaller carousel print for the back and sleeves.  I think this dress is one of the cutest things I’ve ever sewn, and Annie thought so too!  She kept asking me if I could order more of this fabric.  (It’s still in stock at Mabel Madison, so if you want some, you might need to hurry before Annie makes me buy it all!)

Even cuter than the dress is my little niece J. wearing the dress!  Just as I had hoped, it looks like it was custom made for her!  And it’s just too perfect to be able to twirl and twirl in a carousel dress, amiright?

You might have noticed at the beginning of this post I said SOME of June’s Project Sew It.  That’s because I have another niece with a June birthday, but ever the slacker, I don’t have her handmade item sewn yet.  Stay tuned…

Special thanks to my sister in law for taking all the adorable photos of J. in her dress!
