Raglan Shoulder Bow Tutorial

This tutorial teaches how to add a shoulder bow to any raglan sleeve shirt pattern. I used the Aurora Raglan Top & Dress patterns to sew nightgowns with shoulder bows for two of my daughters. This tutorial can also be used for adding shoulder bows to an adult raglan shirt pattern.

Raglan Shoulder Bow Step 1:

Begin by cutting 2 rectangles. The illustration above shows a width of 4″ by a length of longer than the raglan sleeve pattern piece width. For my 11 year old, 4″ was a good measurement. For my 2 year old, I used a 3″ width. An adult might desire a 5″ width. Play around with different widths to determine desired width.

Also cut 2 small 1.5″ x 4″ small rectangles. These will become the bow’s center.

Raglan Shoulder Bow Step 2:

With the right sides together, sew the short (1.5″) ends of a small rectangle together. Repeat for other small rectangle.

Turn the small rectangles, which are now tubes, so the right sides are facing out.

Raglan Shoulder Bow Step 4:

Slide the small tubes to the center of the large rectangle. Just estimate the center position for now.

With the right side of the bow and the raglan sleeve facing you, baste one side of the long rectangle to one side of the raglan sleeve piece. Play around with placement, but 2-3 inches down from the top of the FRONT of the raglan sleeve pieces should be adequate.

Slide tube closer to the center of the bow and tack it in place with a few stitches if you desire. Baste the other side of the rectangle to the other side of the raglan sleeve piece. There will be excess hanging off the side.

Trim the excess fabric from one (or both) sides of the bow. Repeat these steps for the other bow and raglan sleeve. Assemble your raglan sleeve pattern as the instructions direct.
